October is National Audiology Awareness Month and in honor of that, here are 3 myths debunked about audiologists:
Myth 1: Audiologists only see older individuals. A common misconception is that hearing loss only affects people over 65. In reality, half of those who suffer from hearing loss are younger than age 65 and hearing loss can happen at any age. Audiologists work with patients at all stages of life, from infancy to late adulthood.
Myth 2: Audiologists only diagnose and treat hearing loss. Audiologists are ear experts, and the inner ear is responsible for both hearing and balance function. Audiologists can complete testing to diagnose dizziness and balance problems. Finding the correct diagnosis results in more timely and effective treatment.
Myth 3: Audiologists only offer hearing aids as treatment. In addition to hearing aids, audiologists program surgical hearing devices such as cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA). Audiologists can also provide treatment options for conditions such as tinnitus.
Audiologists are able to serve patients across many different age groups and health conditions.
