Bone Anchored Hearing Solutions

Bone anchored hearing aids are a hearing solution for individuals with outer or middle ear problems, or for some individuals with single-sided deafness. Bone anchored hearing aids transmit acoustic information to the auditory system via vibrations through the skull. These devices are often excellent solutions for our patients with recurring ear infections, surgical changes, or when traditional hearing aids aren’t a feasible option. Several different systems of bone anchored hearing aids exist, including the traditional BAHA device with an abutment post, magnetic coupling, and softband wear options.

If you appear to be a candidate for a bone anchored hearing aid, you may be referred for additional evaluation. At this appointment, the audiologist will collect information regarding your hearing loss, previous or ongoing medical concerns related to your ears, and the impact hearing loss has in your day-to-day life. We will then program a bone anchored hearing aid using a demo headband (similar to a piece used during traditional hearing testing) to demonstrate how this type of device might sound. You will wear the bone anchored hearing aid and listen to recorded sentences in the booth. This may be done in both quiet and with background noise to provide a reference of listening in various environments. If the results of this evaluation and your perception of speech are favorable, the audiologist will provide in depth information regarding what a bone anchored hearing aid and how it works. Device selection and next steps will be reviewed at this appointment.

If you are unsure if you are a candidate for a bone anchored hearing solution, give our office a call for further information.
